What We Do

The Groundwater, Watershed, and Ecosystem Restoration Division (GWERD) conducts research to provide the scientific basis for tools, strategies, and technologies to protect and restore groundwater quality, surface water quality, and ecosystem functions within a watershed perspective. GWERD research provides the scientific basis for tools, strategies, and technologies to protect and restore ground and surface water quality and ecosystem functions.

Research and outreach includes:

  • studies of the physical, chemical, and biological processes that control the transport of water, chemicals, and/or sediments in surface and subsurface environments
  • site-specific studies to determine the effects of innovative remediation technologies and ecosystem management practices on pollutant removal or pollution avoidance
  • development and application of models and decision support systems to understand how to improve and protect water quality and enhance community and ecosystem sustainability
  • technical support to EPA Regions, program offices, states, local governments, and other customers on specific problems and needs, including Superfund sites, that can be addressed by Division research.
